A very, very foggy morning turned into a gorgeous day for
sail-in photos and a boat cruise. Before
our boat tour to Lysefjord and Pulpit Rock, we did some shopping and brief
touring of Old Town Stavanger. Leaving Stavanger, we started to get closer to
the mountains rising from the seas and settlements and villages adorning the
coastline. It was a fantastic cruise, the fjords were amazing and the scenery
spectacular, Pulpit Rock seeming to reach into the sky above incredible
Lysefjord. The cruise also took us to Vagabond’s Cave an opening into the
mountain...we made a quick stop to see the goats in summer pasture and the boat
carefully nudged the bow up to the Hanging Falls and offered the passengers a
taste of pure mountain water...a really enjoyable experience. On our return to
Stavanger, we were able to make our way to the striking Swords in the Rock
(Sverd i fjell) Monument, three Viking swords driving into the ground
commemorating a kingdom battle in 872, the swords stand 32 feet high and sit
atop the Bay of Mollebukta. On our return to the city, we visited the oldest
Cathedral in Norway between 1123 and 1128. Next, we browsed the harbor stalls
and made our way to Gamla (Old) Stavanger...up and down narrow cobbled stone
lanes past wooden houses decorated with beautiful summer flowers. This was our
last port in the amazing country of Norway a land of mountains, fjords and
intense natural beauty.... another great cruise on the Zuiderdam…..
