Zuiderdam MegaVoyage 2018-2019, Akureyri, Iceland, Part 2 of 2

The weather played havoc with a lot of my sail in photos but it did clear some for our arrival late morning into Akureyri. We left the ship and picked up our car rental and off we went on another adventure in Iceland. Just outside of Akureyri, the road climbs steeply away from Iceland’s longest fjord Eyjafjordur and crossed the scenic Vikurskard pass, we choose to take the pass rather than the tunnel for the views. Our first stop was Godafoss, the waterfall of the heathen gods and one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. The rain was coming down pretty hard so we made a brief stop at the Skutustadir Pueudocraters...Following Lake Myvatn around we arrived at the Dimmuborgir, a labyrinth of lava formations. From there we passed the Bjarnarflag Geothermal Power Station to the crest of the Namaskaro Pass we stopped at a the viewpoint for a panoramic view of the entire Myvatn area...coming down the pass we arrived at the Namafjall Geothermal area with its steaming landscape...we parked and stepped outside to the pungent hydrogen sulphide fumes, plugged our noses and explored the diverse landscape of stacked rocks spitting steam, bubbling pools and a terrain brushed with vivid colors...it was late afternoon so we decided to return to Akureyri...the weather was not the greatest but we still had a great day exploring all the natural wonders Iceland has to offer...even though names are hard to pronounce Iceland is an exciting place to travel….  Loving every day aboard the ms Zuiderdam….  Pity this will come to a close soon.  It has truly been one of the best voyages I’ve ever taken and that says a lot given my experience cruising the world.
