We arrived into St. John’s with our constant companion, the
fog. St. John’s is the Capitol city of
Newfoundland and Labrador and the easternmost city in North America. We started
our tour with a local guide, Sherry House and headed out of town to see the
Lighthouse at Cape Spear and also the most easternmost point in North
America...below the Lighthouse we toured the bunkers remaining from World War
II. Our next stop was the quaint fishing village of Petty Harbor - Maddox Cove.
Before returning to the city, we drove along Southside Road across the harbor
from downtown St. John’s for a great view of the ship, downtown and the area
known as the Battery, a small village where small colorful houses cling to the
sheer cliffs below Signal Hill. We drove through downtown to make the climb up
to Signal Hill but the fog turned us around and we went to Quidi Vidi, a
village within the city that reflects the old fishing spirit of the area. While
waiting for the fog to lift we toured the city, passing Quidi Vidi Lake, St.
John the Baptist Basilica, the historic and colorful iconic wooden houses of
St. John’s, Colonial Building the former home of the Newfoundland Parliament
before they joined Canada in 1949 and The Rooms. Our second attempt at Signal
Hill was not too successful either...while were driving up to the Cabot Tower,
the fog rolled in... reducing the visibility significantly.... on the bright
side we did not encounter rain all day. We returned to the ship early as we had
a dinner engagement in the Pinnacle Restaurant with the Captain and Senior
Officers...our farewell family dinner and evening with this great group of
friends was very special and memorable.
I will really miss this wonderful group of Officers and Crew….. just the Best!!!!
