A very foggy day in the Shetland Islands, so much so that
it was not a good photo day. We hired a taxi to take us to the North of the
mainland island to see the Cliffs of Eshaness, Shetland's most dramatic cliff
scenery, through the heavy mist you could barely see the effects of the North
Atlantic's force on the landscape. The fog did not dissipate in the least on
our return trip to Lerwick...we passed through the fertile Tingwall
Valley....This is an area of uninterrupted views across farmland, small lochs
and streams. A handful of houses and the occasional church stand out against
the skyline. We headed south through a sheep, peat and heather covered
landscape before, suddenly, the road passes a belt of trees, the only ones of
any significance in the barren Shetlands. Our taxi driver Ronald MacDonald felt
a bit guilty about the weather and decided to take us to the west of the island
to sunny Scalloway the former capital of the Shetlands...by the way it was not
sunny but the fog had cleared enough to get a photo of Scalloway Castle and the
harbor of this quaint village. Before returning to Lerwick we briefly stopped
at a breeder to see some Shetland ponies. Back in Lerwick, we passed Broch of
Clickmin and had the driver drop us in center town...from here we toured the harbor
front, Fort Charlotte, the Town Hall and the main shopping street. On the
recommendation of our cab driver and the Zuiderdam Hotel Director we stopped
for lunch at the Fort Cafe...the fish and chips were absolutely delicious. The
day in our last Scottish port turned out to be great, the sun poked through and
I was able to get some more photos. A day at sea tomorrow to continue with my
packing duties...Our next stop will be Reykjavik, Iceland.
