Cathy and I took the ship’s shuttle to Reykjavik this morning. The shuttle followed the waterfront passing the Hofdi House, best known as the location for the summit meeting of presidents Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in 1986, a historical event that effectively marked the end of the Cold War. We were dropped at the Harpa, Iceland’s biggest concert hall. Behind Harpa we walked to a section of the old pier looking for reflection shots. We our way to Reykjavik’s iconic church we made our way to Skólavörðustígur Street leading to the Hallgrimskirkja Church in the background, this Rainbow Street is definitely one of the Reykjavik’s busiest streets. On each side of the road, there are souvenir shops, clothing stores and cafes. Once at the church we went up in the tower for a panoramic view over the city and its surroundings. One of the tallest buildings in the country, Hallgrimskirkja Church has a height of almost 250 feet. Leaving the church, we stopped for a coffee and had a delicious piece of carrot cake with whipped cream. We walked back to the shuttle pickup point passing Arnarholl Hill, a grassy hill with a statue of Ingólfur Arnarson, the first settler to Iceland. This park is as a gathering spot for the people of Reykjavik on celebration days. The shuttle dropped us at the ship and I had some time basking in the warm Iceland sun. Another great day in Iceland. We send our best wishes to Captain Friso on the occasion of his birthday…
