Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada...

Hello Canada!  Another early morning (0530), for a sunrise sail in up the Humber Fjord to Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Being the first port of arrival in Canada, Ann and Cathy had to meet with Canada Border Services officials for clearance as they have changed their disembarkation from Boston to Halifax. Once we got off the ship, we hired a local taxi to tour the Bay of Islands area charted by Captain James Cook in the late 1700s. The local mountain chain is part of the Appalachian Mountains that start in the southern USA and extend this far north. The drive on Route 450 also known as Captain Cook's Trail along the shore of the Humber Arm was lovely. Most of the road winds and bends along the cliff edge giving you views of the islands in Bay of Islands. Along the way are small fishing villages perched at the water’s edge with huge hills at their back. We drove through the southern coastal communities, stopping at Frenchman’s Cove with its lighthouse, York Harbor, Lark Harbor, Little Port and Lark Harbor. Returning to Corner Brook we went to the top of Crow’s Hill, to the Cook Monument. The area was first surveyed by renowned explorer Captain James Cook, and the Monument stands as testament to a proud chapter in his exploratory career. This monument offers great views of the city, the harbor and surrounding mountains. We stopped at the Emporium, a shop with souvenirs, antiques, postcards, folk art, handcrafts, and products of local historical interest. We had a nice day and with the warm sunny weather, I was able to spend a couple of hours soaking up the sun…  Time to shift gears and evolve from world explorer to sun worshiper…  Finally, I did pop out to snap a couple of photos as we sailed away…  Nice day!
