Qaqortoq, Greenland... Part 1 of 2

Up at 5:30am for sail in with a low ceiling and fog but there were lots of icebergs along the way. We were off on an early tender and happy the fog had lifted so we had no delays in the tendering process. The first thing you spot when you step foot on land is the ‘Welcome to Qaqortoq’ sign displayed brightly on the red building straight ahead. Qaqortoq is situated between rolling steep hills dotted with brightly colored houses.  On our stroll through town, we came across a number of pieces that make up the open-air “Stone and Man” exhibition, featuring stone carvings by some of Greenland and Scandinavia’s most famous artists. Qaqortoq is a very walkable town with most attractions clustered around the harbor and main square with the country’s oldest fountain. We also visited the church and the fish market. The fish market is an interesting place with fresh seal being butchered. The ships Security Officer and I climbed up to the satellite communications hill for a view of Qaqortoq from above…it was a panoramic view of the town as it curves around a sheltered bay. Before getting back on the ship we walked around the harbor to capture some local wall art. In the end, the sun was out in all its glory brightening all the colorful houses across the town.  It was a nice relaxing day in Qaqortoq...
