With our guide Martin, the day started with a walking
tour of the highlights of Sofia. Sofia is a church, park and museum packed city.
We left the hotel and went to the Law Court Building flanked by a pair of
lions...from there we turned around and passed the Holy Wisdom Church.
Encircled within a courtyard of modern dwelling buildings, we came upon the
Rotunda of St George, the oldest preserved structure in the city and UNESCO
World Heritage. Arriving at Independent Square, we could see the statue of
Sveta Sofia, Catholic Church, Mosque and Jewish Synagogue...this area is
surrounded by communist style government buildings as well as the distinctive
former Communist Party Headquarters. From there we went underground to the
Metro station built around and on top of an ancient Roman ruins known as the
town of Serdica. Crossing the street, we stopped at the Central Mineral Baths
complex...around the building, taps constantly spout warm mineral smelling
spring water. Just off the next square, we came upon the Bulgarian Presidents
office with two ceremonial guards posted at the entrance. Passing the National Theatre,
we made our way past St. Nicholas Russian Church to the Alexander Nevsky
Russian Orthodox Cathedral...the church is surrounded by a large square and an
antique flea market. From here we returned to the hotel to meet our driver
Angel for our 4-hour journey to Belgrade, Serbia. Another great day in Bulgaria
and looking forward Serbia.
