I was indeed up bright and early again this morning for sail into Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. Once docked, Ann, Cathy and I got off first thing to do a walking tour through downtown Port-of-Spain. We left the Cruise Port and walked to the Port-of-Spain Lighthouse Spain, one of Trinidad's most prominent landmarks, built in 1842. Port-of-Spain is a busy city with many modern high-rise buildings weaved among the charming 19th century buildings. Being the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, Port-of-Spain is the seat of the country’s government services. From the light house we headed up Broadway Avenue to Independence Square and followed the Square to Brian Lara Promenade. The Promenade is adjacent to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The lovely Cathedral is the first catholic church built in Port of Spain in 1832. Next, we headed towards Woodford Square but stopped at the entrance to Chinatown on Charlotte Street to buys some more hot chilis for the crew. We were warned by some locals to be very careful in this area, taking the advice we took a different route to Woodford Square via Frederick Street. Woodford Square is surrounded by many iconic buildings like Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral. Around it he perimeter of Woodford Square on Hart Street is home to the Old Fire Station, a beautiful restored heritage building…across from the Fire Station on Abercrombie Street is the block long Red House complex that houses the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago. On the street behind the Red House a building piqued our interest and it turned out to be the Police Headquarters. Now a heritage property, the building was built in 1876 from local limestone in the Italian-Gothic style. Knox Street running west of the Square, houses the Hall of Justice, City Hall and the National Library. Straying off the beaten path a bit, we had a nice walk before the heat of day…it is our third day of 100 degrees. After returning to the ship, I enjoyed some time soaking up some sun in this hot, humid climate... Loving every day!!!
