I got up very early this morning to take photos as we sailed into Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas… I could tell by the clouds that we might be in for some showers today. We arrived at the piers at Havensight, the closest cruise port to downtown Charlotte Amalie. Cathy and I were off the ship as soon as it cleared and walked to downtown before the crowds as there were 5 ships in port today. It was a pleasant surprise to find a revitalized harbor front walkway to downtown, known as the Veterans Drive, the improvements were phenomenal. On our last visit in 2017, St Thomas was just recovering from Hurricane Irma and Maria striking within two weeks of each other. Although, the hurricanes were 4 years ago, there is still some remnants of the devastation with COVID19 further complicating the situation. On the way to town, we passed Fort Christian, built by the Danes between 1672-1680, is the oldest building on St. Thomas. Charlotte Amalie is a busy, colorful town that is a host to Danish colonial architecture. We enjoyed walking in the historical district where most of the island’s ancient 17th-century buildings are found. St. Thomas is famous for its duty-free shopping, and we meandered the alleyways and found some treasures. On our return to the ship, the heavens opened up... it was actually a pleasant cool down. We met Ann in the Havensight shopping area and did some browsing. The rest of the day was spent in the Retreat between downpours. Despite the rain, it was a nice day the St. Thomas.
