2020 Grand South America & Antarctica Voyage, General San Martín, Peru, Part 2 of 2

It was an exciting day for me today, back to the Nazca Lines again….  I really enjoyed this experience back in 2013 and was ready once again.  The first thing I noticed when we sailed in this morning was the cooler temperatures, you can tell we’re heading south. We got picked up at the ship this morning and drove to the Pisco International Airport for our flight over the Nazca Desert.  Sometimes I thing that the drive back and forth through the desert is one of the best parts of the trip, such beauty!  We boarded our 12-seater Cessna Caravan for a 30-minute flight to the area of the Nazca lines...we were worried as the outbound flight was totally clouded over...once we started our decent, the clouds cleared and there they were...the Nazca Lines! Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the Nazca lines are a group of very large geoglyphs created between 500 BC and 500 AD. It is estimated the combined length of all the lines is over 808 miles and the group cover an area of about 19 square miles. The figures are best seen from the air and vary in complexity. There are hundreds are simple lines and geometric designs....  we were able to see the major designs like; the whale, astronaut, hummingbird, spiral, spider, dog, parrot, hands, condor, tree, flower, monkey and dog...such an amazing site. What an amazing experience! The drive back to the ship was another spectacular drive through the desert.  The sail away was pretty amazing as well…  Once more look at the colorful desert scenery and a look at the Candelabra, another large geoglyph, not sure or not it’s related to the Nazca Lines or not but very interesting.  The next two days are at sea as we make our way to Chile.  Great day!!!!
