2020 Grand South America & Antarctica Voyage, Chacabuco, Chile, Part 1 of 2

Today, I was up for an early sail in and it was much cooler and breezy. Cathy and I were off the ship on the first tender and walked around Puerto Chacabuco before being picked up by our driver Lautaro Silva. Our drive began through the small village of Chacabuco and continued through the rugged scenery of Chilean Patagonia, following the Aysen River...we made a quick stop to walk over the Aysen River on an old wooden suspension bridge. Just after entering the Rio Simpson National Reserve, we stopped for a view of the Virgen waterfall and unspoiled pine forests along the banks of the Río Simpson River. This area is called the arm of the Andes Mountains and has breathtaking views. We descended through the Andes into the city of Coyhaique. We stopped at the Plaza des Armes designed in a pentagon shape. From Coyhaique we returned via the same route back through the Andes Mountains and Simpson National Reserve. Before returning to the ship we stopped the town of Puerto Aysen visiting the cemetery, shipyard, fishing port and the Presidente Ibañez Bridge, famous for being the longest suspension bridge in Chile. We want to thank Lautaro for a great day in Patagonia with marvelous scenery and the weather cooperated very nicely.  Great day!  Loving my time on the Volendam....  Great officers and crew!!!!
