I got up before 5 this morning, despite less-than-optimal weather forecasts to view Cape Horn, once again. The weather was indeed a bit ugly, fierce winds and precipitation as well. As we got closer to Cape Horn, you know exactly why it was a place that had struck terror into the hearts of sailors for so many centuries…The winds and swells can be fierce. Cape Horn is actually one of a series of tiny islands hanging off the furthest tip of Tierra del Fuego archipelago of southern Chile. Cape Horn marks the northern entrance to the Drake Passage and the meeting point of the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. We got pretty close to the islands to see the lighthouse, chapel, and the Cape Horn Memorial, a sculpture of a flying albatross. It was nice but staying in bed would have been pretty nice as well…
