After an incredible day of exploring Antarctica yesterday, we spent the night in Dallmann Bay. This morning, we headed across the Gerlache Strait to Cuverville Island. The weather was not good today with wind, driving rain, fog and snow. Our first adventure today was Cuverville Island, a small, rocky island on the northern end of the narrow Errera Channel. Cuverville Island has steep cliffs with a rocky shoreline and home to a large penguin rookery with thousands of Gentoos. The Antarctic scenery is amazing and so dramatic in places. We did have numerous whale sittings during the day. Due to weather and ice conditions the route plan changed and we headed back across the Gerlache Strait to Dallmann Bay. Situated between Anvers Island and Brabant Island Dallmann Bay was discovered in 1874 by a German whaler, Captain Eduard Dallmann. There was quite the whale activity in this bay. For a day of absolute crappy weather, it continued to be an amazing Antarctic experience… Tonight, the ship will shelter in Dallmann Bay overnight and head to Charlotte Bay tomorrow morning... at least that’s the current plan. All up to the weather! We attended the captain’s talk on our plan for next two days in the Antarctic…Sounds like bad weather ahead….
