Despite still being sleep deprived, I couldn’t help myself and got up in the wee hours of the morning to photograph our arrival into Portland, Maine. For me, the sail into Portland, Maine is always exciting, so beautiful with nice lighthouses. The first couple lighthouses that can be seen are far in distance. Those lighthouses are known as the Two Lights, the first twin lighthouses on the coast of Maine. The western light was deactivated in 1924 and is now a private home. The most impressive lighthouse in the area and the one that is best known is the Portland Head Lighthouse at Fort Williams Park and of course, I took a ton of photos of it. We also sailed by the Spring Point Ledge and Bug Light lighthouses. Portland is an old seacoast town 100 miles north of Boston and a very walkable city. I visited the tourist bureau to pick up a map and just did my normal walkabout, going here and there without any real purpose other than to get some exercise and to get a few photos. I accomplished both, a 5 mile walk and lots of photos. I decided that the 500+ photos that I took this morning wasn’t enough, so I went out for sail away testing out my new 180-600mm lens, maybe get a better look at the Two Lights lighthouses off in the distance… So, I ended up taking over 1000 photos today. The blog took a very loooong time! This was a spectacular beginning for my Volendam voyages. Now, we are off to Halifax which may be a bit more of a relaxed day for me… Need to pace myself!
