2025 Volendam, Rockland, Maine...

Today was a pretty exciting day for me…  First of all, Rockland, Maine is a new destination for me…  that doesn’t happen often enough.  Secondly, when I was riding the Tender ashore, I discovered I was sitting across a guy who lived down the street from me in High School and who also attended the US Air Force Academy, graduating a year ahead of me…  I haven’t seen him in over 55 years.  What are the odds?  So, Joe Kupko and his wife and I will be planning a dinner together to catch up a wee bit!  Now, about Rockland, our port of call today…  Rockland, Maine, was founded in the early 19th century, initially thriving as a bustling center for shipbuilding and the lime industry due to its strategic coastal location. The arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s further propelled its growth as a key economic hub for fishing and tourism. Today, Rockland is known for its vibrant arts scene, maritime heritage, and as the host of the annual Maine Lobster Festival, celebrating its rich coastal culture.  As we sailed into Rockland, two of my favorites of the day were viewed along the way; Owl’s Head Lighthouse and the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse.  Owl's Head Lighthouse, was first established in 1825 on the rugged cliffs of Owl's Head, Maine and serves as a vital navigational aid for vessels entering Penobscot Bay. The current structure, built in 1856, is notable for its striking 30-foot-tall stone tower and picturesque surroundings, making it a popular destination for visitors seeking scenic views and a glimpse into maritime history.  The next lighthouse along the way was the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse…  The Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse was completed in 1902, serves as an iconic symbol of maritime heritage, guiding vessels safely into Rockland Harbor. Built on a granite breakwater that extends over a mile into the sea, the lighthouse features a distinctive combination of a red tower and white keeper's house, making it a popular attraction for visitors and photographers. Once I arrived ashore, I wandered about all over this picturesque little town and along the waterfront.   I even tasted a bit of pastry along the way…  It was a beautiful day and really enjoyed my first visit to Rockland.
