2025_26 Oosterdam, Puerto Montt, Chile...

It was very dark when I was out to take some photos sailing into Puerto Montt. Puerto Montt is the capital of Chile’s Los Lagos region, and serves as one of the major entry points to the Chilean Lake District, Chiloe Island and Chile's northern fjords. We got off the ship on the first tender and headed for Angelmo Market. It was a bit early for the market as the fish and produce stalls were just starting to open and the artisan shops were still closed…We took advantage of what the market had to offer. Normally, the area is bustling with restaurants and small stalls, where both locals and tourists come together to enjoy fresh seafood and experience the maritime culture of Puerto Montt. We retraced our steps back to the cruise terminal and then decided to walk to Puerto Montt’s downtown area. Walking along the Costanera, a scenic waterfront promenade that stretches along the city’s bay is a pleasant way to take in the downtown skyline and the water. We stopped at a beautiful glass building that turned out to be the bus station. The other attraction along the waterfront is this giant sculpture of a couple called Sitting by the Sea.  Next, we headed into the commercial district to the Plaza des Armas, Puerto Montt’s main square. Towering over the main square is the Nuestra SeƱora del Carmen Cathedral with its distinctive copper dome…Unfortunately, this morning the church was closed to visitors. Being the end of our time in Chile, we stopped at a currency exchange to convert the remaining Chilean pesos. We had a pleasant return walk along the waterfront and of course catching some street art along the way. Made it back to the ship on the tender in time for lunch. We had a great morning in Puerto Montt exploring some new areas.
