Grand South America & Antarctica Voyage, Cape Horn...

Another up early day to be ready for our sail past Cape Horn. The weather was cold and the wind across the bow was fierce.  Cape Horn is a rocky headland on Hornos Island, in southern Chile's Tierra del Fuego archipelago. No other sea route in the world has claimed so many lives as the journey around Cape Horn. Cape Horn marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage and where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. The albatross-shaped Cape Horn Monument commemorates the lives of thousands of seafarers who perished attempting to sail around the cape and its wild seas. Cape Horn has two lighthouses, one at the Chilean Naval Station, which is the largest and visible from the ship. After passing the Cape Horn we entered the Drake Passage. The seas here are merciless and the winds unpredictable. There's no 'perfect' time to cross the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula so we will see how the weather cooperates. We are Antarctic bound for the next 2 days.

  1. When we crossed Drake Passage with you back in 2010, you joked about fastening the seat belt on your bed. Bill, NC
