I
was out bright and early this very cold and windy morning for our approach into
Glacier Alley…as each day passes the weather is getting colder. Glacier Alley stretches along a good portion of the celebrated 150-mile-long Beagle Channel
in the vast territory of Tierra del Fuego. Described in detail by Charles
Darwin during his five-year voyage on the HMS Beagle, Glacier Alley is a
shorter section of the channel that showcases the 5 tidewater glaciers. These
massive blue glaciers flow from the Darwin Icefield in Chile’s Southern
Patagonia to the Pacific Ocean. All five tidewater glaciers are named after
European countries: Espana (Spain), Italia (Italy); Alemania (Germany); Holanda
(Holland); in order of the 19th-century explorers who mapped out the region. We
also passed the Francia (France) Glacier known as a hanging glacier as it does
not flow to the sea. Beagle Channel’s Glacier Alley of the Chilean Fjords is
absolutely stunning; there is so much natural wonder, and the glaciers and
waterfalls are close enough to see all this majestic beauty. This unique
destination takes you to another world filled with unique landscapes and
scenery. Continuing along the Beagle Channel we will reach Ushuaia, Argentina
in a couple of hours. I was freezing as I took all the scenery in from the
forward decks, but it was definitely worth it!!!!
