Grand South America & Antarctica Voyage, Scenic Cruising Chilean Fjords...

Leaving Castro on October 31st, we had a great view of the Andes Mountains. This beautiful vista of the Corcovado Volcano dominated the landscape of the Gulf of Corcovado area and was visible leaving Chiloé Island. We were very lucky the weather was so beautiful!  We started our cruising through the Chilean Fjords late in the day of November 1, 2023 with beautiful sunny weather. We were in the Tamarind for dinner and I was able to get some photos of the fjords after dinner…being in the southern hemisphere and heading into summer the days are much longer. Chile’s expansive fjords stretch all the way to the country’s southernmost tip, a scarcely explored region that really is the end of the line. I was up early this morning; it was raining hard but I was ready for another day of scenic cruising in the Chilean Fiords…. Today, we were headed to the El Brujo Glacier, a tidewater glacier part of the Southern Patagonia ice fields located in the Bernardo O’Higgins National Park…El Brujo is the largest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere, outside of Antarctica. When we got in front of the glacier, the captain swung the ship so that the stern was facing the glacier. Despite the rain and overcast skies everyone was out on deck to watch the spectacular scenery as we approached the El Brujo glacier. The ship got quite close and we saw the amazing blue ice that characterizes a glacier. Also, small pieces of the glacier that break away are known as bergy bits and growlers…these are the smallest known icebergs between 2 and 5 meters. We enjoyed so many sights on our cruise through the Chilean Fjords. Later in the day we will be sailing through the Magellan so stay tuned….
