Puntarenas, Costa Rica....

This morning I got up for sail-in and we had arrived earlier than anticipated. Once the ship was cleared Cathy and I made our way to town. Today, we went off the beaten path and did a reverse route to our last visit. Not far from the ship along the Malecon we visited the former Marine Aquarium to capture the wall art on the exterior of building. From there we walked through a residential area to the fishing pier…No fishing boats in this morning, most likely because it was Sunday…the downtown was also very quiet with only a handful of shops open in the municipal market. Around town, we found unusual old buildings, like the Fait House across from Victoria Park, reminders of the important role that Puntarenas once played in Costa Rican history. We could see a tower in the distance and followed along albeit not the greatest part of town, until we came to Moray Canas Park, unfortunately the perimeter of the park is draped in green fencing and closed to the public…from here we went to the Segrado Corazon Cathedral and being Sunday, it was open this visit. On our hunt for wall art, we toured the Malecon and returned to the Tourist Plaza in time to catch the entertainment. There were a lot more locals out and about today and the majority were unmasked…we had our KN95 masked on and kept our distance. With a heat index 98F degrees, the masks are hot, but you do what you have to, to protect yourself. We had increased protocols dockside on this visit…as soon as we were off the ship, we had to show our vaccination certificates and photographed…on our return the ship we had our temperature taken and were photographed again…. We just go with the flow! On our return to the ship, we spent the afternoon in the Retreat and had a visit from Captain Friso. Another great day on the Zuiderdam.
