Koningsdam 2017, Day 40, Amber Cove, Dominican Republic (Part 1 of 2)

On my return to Amber Cove, we decided to go into Puerto Plata to explore the local surroundings.  Ann, Cathy and I got off the ship early, spent two hours at the Amber Cove resort, shopped a bit, used the great Wi-Fi…. Around 10:00 we decided to hire a taxi to take us into Puerto Plata.  Our driver, Anibal Silverio was very accommodating and took us to see the highlights of Puerto Plata. (His photo is at the bottom of Part 2 of 2).  I highly recommend him, very professional…  great driver!  The 10k drive to town gave me ample local life photo opportunities while we experienced the countryside landscapes with stunning vistas of the coast and mountains.  Our first stop was the downtown area, we walked around the central square or Independence Park with its lovely Victorian gazebo and surrounded by the Cathedral San Felipe and classic colourful wooden gingerbread buildings and mansions.  Being Sunday, the local people were out taking in all the sites and activities of their city.  The driver took us into the market areas, great opportunity to snap a few photos…the people were very friendly.  Next, we stopped at the San Felipe Fort built in 1564 to protect the city from pirate attacks.  Fantastic fort!  After leaving the fort we travelled along the Malecon and make a quick stop to walk on the beautiful white sand beach.  Anibal took us to a high point in the city for a great panoramic view of Puerto Plata.  On our return to the ship we stopped at a local fishing village near the port.  All in all, we had a great day discovering a new area for me.  Then, it was off to the Retreat!!!!
