I was out on deck very early this morning as we sailed toward Naplio... The weather was cool and windy, but I was able to get some nice shots of the mountains. When we tendered to shore the lighting had improved dramatically, so I could get photos of the surrounding fortresses and the harbor. Our guide Nikos picked us up at the ship we began our tour to the majestic historical monuments of Peloponnese. The Peloponnese is a region rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Our first stop was a visit the famous Mycenae, home of the Mycenaean civilization and Greek prehistory, where we visited the famous burial circles, the Gate of the Lions and the famous vaulted tombs of Atreus and Clytemnestra. We moved on to Corinth, to see if the ancient city of Corinth with its famous Temple of Apollo. From here we drove to see the magnificent Corinth Canal…it had been almost 50 years since I crossed over this canal…such an amazing feat all completed by hand. Leaving the canal we headed to Epidaurus. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was constructed in late 4th century BC, it is considered to be the most perfect ancient Greek theatre with regard to acoustics and aesthetics. This region has one UNESCO World Heritage Site after another, from the Bronze Age tombs of Ancient Mycenae to the Great Theatre of Epidaurus, in immaculate condition at 2,300 years young. We thoroughly enjoyed our day in the Peloponnese and the weather was perfect.
