2020 Grand South America & Antarctica Voyage, Montevideo, Uruguay, Part 2 of 2

I was up to take my early morning sail-in pictures. Cathy and I met our guide Gonzalo Mara at the port gate. We started our tour of Montevideo in the old city, with its colonial buildings and architecture. Our first stop was the Zabala Square and then to Constitution Square to see the beautiful neoclassical Metropolitan Cathedral and Old Town Hall. Next, we visited the beautiful National Post Office Tower and walked up Sarandi Street, the pedestrian mall to Independence Square, a prominent plaza with a statue at its center of General Artigas, the father of Uruguay Independence...underneath the statue we visited the mausoleum of Artigas. Next, we went to Cagancha Square with Supreme Court of Justice, a stunning building, followed by the Legislative Palace (Congress). We stopped at the Agricultural Market for a walk around and did some shopping. Our next stop was in the Prado Neighborhood to see the lovely Prado Hotel now a Tea Room, the Rose-garden, La Diligencia - The Covered Wagon bronze sculpture located in Prada Park and the Gothic Carmelites church. We stopped for lunch in the old town and had the beef and the delicious Provoleta – grilled provolone cheese. Next, we drove along the Montevideo sea front to the Holocaust Memorial and the Quarries of Rodo Park. We ended our day driving along the La Rambla to the Montevideo Sign...La Rambla is the name of the extended boardwalk and beaches that spans the city.  Our driver and guide dropped us in the El Mercado Del Puerto (Port Market) area. We did some shopping and walking around the market area before returning to the ship. It was a great day; the people were friendly and the weather was perfect to wander the cobble stone streets and see the lovely sights that Montevideo has to offer. The sail-away from Montevideo was pretty stunning….  What a day!
