I
was up early to capture my sail in photos into another new port, Ilhabela,
Brazil… Once we were anchored, Cathy and I got the
first tender to town. Long before attracting thousands of visitors from São
Paulo, Ilhabela was a popular destination among pirates and buccaneers who used
its bays and canals for shelter while they counted their loot and made repairs
to their ships. Today, Ilhabela is known as the sailing capital of the
Brazilian coast with its dramatic landscape of cliffs, beautiful beaches and
interior green hills and an emphasis on relaxation. From the pier, John joined
us and we took a two hour taxi tour of the island; First to the north passing
many beautiful beaches...Then returning through town we went to the Branca
Waterfall, stopped at the Paixmo exhibition by Gilmar Pinna and drove south
along the coast to Portinho beach returning to town within 1.5 hours. Just a
word of caution about the taxi ride...our driver, while driving text and talked
on his cell phone the entire trip...he was a horrible driver. We complained on
our return and the taxi company gave us a rebate for the half hour tour we were
deprived of with promises about dealing with driver safety… Not likely to happen... Once back in the historic
center of town we visited the Nossa Senhora d'Ajuda church, built in 1806. Then we stopped to do some shopping and went
back to the ship to relax...it was a really, really hot day so it was poolside for me….
