2011 Colorado Roadtrip Day 2

This morning it was back on the road very early, heading back to Devils Tower. It looks quite spectacular in the early morning light, and the prairie dogs looked kind of cute as well.

Then, it was back on the road, off to South Dakota. We headed in a circuitous route on our way to Rapid City. The first stop was Deadwood, South Dakota, where we walked around town a bit and then hiked up to The Mount Moriah Cemetery, otherwise known as Boot Hill. Here we found the graves of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Boot Hill gave a nice vantage point for a scenic shot of the town of Deadwood.

Then we took scenic drives thru the Black Hills National Forest and the Needles Highway on our way to the Crazy Horse Memorial. This work is quite impressive, although when you consider they have been at it since 1948, it is a bit slow. It is still going to take many many years before the memorial is complete.

Back on the road again, this time heading for Mount Rushmore. I have not been here since 1968, and I can't believe they still have the same people up there carved in stone..... There seems to be a nice vacant space between Lincoln and Roosevelt where I could fit in nicely, maybe I should discuss this with President Obama. Anyway...I had a great time here, took a ton of photos and even had a nice lunch. We also took a guided hike with one if the national park rangers which was quite informative.

Once we had our fill of Mount Rushmore, it was off to Bear Country USA. Of course they told us the windows of the vehicle had to be up at all times and since I am a very law abiding citizen and do not care about how my photos turn out, you know I kept them up. Actually.... on second thought, the windows may have come down from time to time, and maybe that is why I am not on Mount Rushmore. I really enjoyed the park and all it's critters and must admit when the park was done, it was time to call it a day. There were so many miles traveled today, and we were fortunate to see so many wondrous sights, that it was a very, very amazing day.

Tomorrow, a place that I can probably identify with...the Badlands.

  1. ALVIN....!!!!!

Love these pictures. This is a roadtrip well worth doing. Rudy still talks about the one we did over a 6 week period a few years ago. We are looking forward to seeing some new places to add to our list of places to visit on our next roadtrip (whenever that might be).
