Welcome to Canada…warm weather and sun. We tendered today and I was out on deck briefly to get a shot of the light house guarding the harbor. I was off the ship on the first tender and waited on shore for Ann and Cathy to get their clearance from Canada Border Services before they could go ashore. We had reserved a taxi a year ago to visit L’Anse aux Meadows. Guy was waiting for us and off we went to L'Anse aux Meadows National and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site uncovered in 1960. Before leaving town, we stopped at the Fox Point Lighthouse on the eastern side of St Anthony Harbor. At the tip of Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula lies the first known evidence of European presence in North America. Norse expeditions sailed here from Greenland, building a small encampment over 1000 years ago against a backdrop of rugged cliffs, and coastline. We walked along the trail to the Meeting of Two Worlds sculpture and onto the fascinating Viking encampment. I immediately recognized two of the re-enactors from my last trip to L’Anse aux Meadows, 15 years ago, World Adventures: Day 32 St. Anthony, Newfoundland (amazingvoyages.blogspot.com) How cool is that! …Just a little bit older looking! We came back to town, did some shopping and returned to the ship to spend the afternoon in the sun on the back deck…the sunshine and warmer temperatures was a nice welcome to the Canada/New England portion of this voyage.
