What a full day!!!! We had a magnificent visit to Hammerfest, posted a two-part blog and then it was time for sail away and some scenic cruising… The sail away from Hammerfest was just lovely. We were also very excited to be able sail past the North Cape or Nordkapp. North Cape is the most northerly point in Europe around 71 degrees north and approximately 1200 miles from the North Pole at the very end of the European landmass. The North Cape plateau with its flat top rises 1000 feet almost straight up from where the Arctic Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean. A little way down the mountain slope stands the rock formation known as the North Cape Horn. Since the 16th century the North Cape has been among the premier sailing marks of the world and has for centuries been a point of reference for seafarers. A true voyager must go to North Cape, at some point in their life. Along with the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Farewell, Cape Horn and Cape Comorin, it a milestone for sailors and world travelers alike. Captain Friso did a great job maneuvering the ship so we could get a perfect view of the North Cape…what a special day!
