An early morning start to our first stop Bermuda, before
we start the transatlantic crossing. I was out on the forward decks around 6:00
as were we’re passing St David’s Lighthouse…
Brought back so many memories of all my voyages to Bermuda in past
years. After docking, Ann, Cathy and I
took the ferry from the Kings Wharf at the Royal Naval Dockyards to Hamilton.
The ferry ride offered a panoramic view of Hamilton Harbor and the many
colorful limestone houses that are quintessentially Bermudian. Hamilton is the
present-day capital of Bermuda as well as the busiest place on the island and
the life, heart and soul of the lively capital. Our first stop was Flying
Colours souvenirs shop for a supply of Bermuda tank tops. Our touring started
at Queens Park and then up the hill to the City Hall and Arts Centre an imposing
white building. We then made our way to the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity
and on to the Cabinet Building flanked by the Cenotaph War Memorial. We then
made our way towards the harbor and strolled along Front Street, the busiest
street on the island. After spending the morning in Hamilton, we decided to
return to the Dockyards. The Bermuda Naval Dockyards was the principle base of
the Royal Navy in the Western Atlantic up until the end of the Cold War. Today,
several warehouses have been turned into the clock tower mall, shops and
restaurants. I did a quick tour of the National Museum that included the
fortress Keep of the Royal Naval Dockyard, Casemates Barracks and the
Commissioners House...great views. Bermuda is a beautiful island and it was very
nice to return many years...we had a very pleasant day...our next stop is the
Azores. Just loving the Zuiderdam!!!!!
