Day 72 Lihue, Kauai (Part 1 of 2)

We took a morning flight out of Honolulu heading for Lihue, Kauai….  The flight was smooth and on time, we rented a car and were off.  Our first stop was the Wailua Falls as we headed north on an old sugar cane road.  The falls we magnificent!  We continued heading north toward the Sleeping Giant Mountain Range until the rain changed our mind after we had gone past Kapaa.  We turned around and headed for Waimea Canyon & Kokee State Parks.  Shame about the rain but when you figure than just 11 miles west of Wailua Falls is the wettest place on earth with over 445 inches of rain a year….  We had a wonderful drive and took a lot of scenic viewpoint stops before ever reaching Waimea Canyon.  It was a fabulous day!  I really enjoyed the canyon, referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.  It certainly is one of the most beautiful islands that I have visited.  After the parks, we headed for Koloa and Poipu Beach to see a couple a great friends, John & Diane St John who happened to be vacationing there when we flew in.  Had a great visit and then it was off to the airport to head back to Honolulu to get back to the ship before it sailed….  What a great day!!!!!
