I took the first tender in this morning to take the first tour of the island to look for Komodo Dragons…. As soon as the tender arrived we saw our first dragon. This turned out to be a pretty good omen. It was just the first dragon out of many we saw today. During the tour I had a fairly close call…. A dragon charged after me as I was shooting photos of it (charging me) and it got perilously close before I dove out of the way. These creatures are very strong, fast and deadly. It made for some great photo opportunities. After the tour was over, our guide approached us and indicated if we wanted to continue touring he would take us so…. For a nominal fee we went out and did it all over again. It was money well spent, there were many more dragons to see. What a day!

They look pretty scary all right. I was wondering if they were fast. Sounds like it. Glad you avoided it. Don't see anything that looks like youngsters.
ReplyDeleteWOW, loved the photos. Great job, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAmazing pictures Jeff! It must really have been something to see more than one at a time. It was very impressive in your photos. I was surprised to see one in the tree. Loved the drooling one. I would definitely have been nervous wandering around there. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteCarrie.
Jeff, love your blog & your photos are wonderful!!!
ReplyDeleteJust curious, have you run into Bill & Sondra??? She is NOT a happy "camper"!!
She has a blog......oh my!! My guess this will be her last HAL cruise. We are 4Star +, and counting our days till our April 1st cruise on MS Westerdam.
Will you be on MS Amsterdam, Sept 7th, 14 day Alaska cruise??? Love to say "hi" if you are on board! Thanks!
John
They are just as ugly today as they were fall of 2010....being lunch for a KD would not be a good way to "go out".
ReplyDeleteGlad you're safe...:-D
Hi Jeff,
ReplyDeleteGreat photos both of the dragons and the wonderful approach to the island. They remind me a little of our huge goanna's though the dragon's head is completely different. They are like our crocodile's, quite pre-historic.
