Boca Da Valéria
is a remote
little Indian community, set at the entrance of the Valéria river. It is located between Parintins and Santarem. Cathy
and I took the first tender to Boca Da Valeria and immediately hired a boat to
tour this Amazon tributary. This boat ride allowed us to explore the jungle in
the quest of pink dolphins, monkeys, sloths, butterflies, and the colorful bird
life. We travelled inland and docked at the foot of a 400-foot hill, leading to
the village of Santa Rita da Valéria overlooking the Amazon
River...we hiked up the hill and walked around the village visiting the school,
church and our driver’s home to meet his family. The boat ride was great...we
returned to Boca da Valeria to explore the village with its simple traditional
lifestyle. Many children were dressed in traditional costumes and carrying
local wildlife...the arrival of the ship brings out the villagers selling their
wares like wooden carvings, gourd masks and jewelry. A very nice touch was the
generosity of the crew volunteering their time to paint the church and
community center during our call in Boca da Valéria. This was a pleasant stop that gives you a good feel of life on the Amazon.
