Our mission for today was to get
the lay of the land so that on upcoming visits to Copenhagen we would be somewhat
familiar with our surroundings...with preplanning prior to our arrival in
Copenhagen, we got off the ship early, cleared immigration and got a taxi to
the Church of our Saviour in Christianshavn district. We had obtained our
Hop on Hop off tickets online and decided to start our city tour in this
area...however, arriving at the church before opening time, we altered our plan
and walked around the Christianshavn. We made our way across the harbor passed;
the Glyptotek Art Museum and Christiansborg Palace -- home of the Danish
Parliament and the Queen's Reception rooms, the old Stock Exchange building in
Dutch Renaissance style, with its spire of entwined dragon tails. Next took the
canal boat tour exploring many of Copenhagen's highlights from the canals and
inner-harbor on the 1 hour canal tour. The Christianshavn and Frederiksholm
canals feature picturesque old buildings and National Landmarks. During your
canal cruise, we had a glimpse of Nyhavn Canal with its 500-year-old
step-gabled houses, the old naval base, the new Royal Library, known as the
Black Diamond, the Copenhagen Opera House, Amalienborg Palace. The canal
cruise was a great panoramic introduction to Danish capital. Next, we did a
picturesque walk through the colorful canal area of Nyhavn...a charming part of
Copenhagen, with brightly colored houses stretching along the canal. We
made a quick refreshment stop and made our way along the Stroeget pedestrian
street, brimming with shops, boutiques and cafés, connecting City Hall Square
with the King's New Square. It was our intention to go up to viewpoint at the
Christiansborg Palace Tarnet/Tower...unfortunately, the elevator was out of
order...next visit for sure! From this point we returned to the Church of our
Saviour, a stunning baroque style church with a soaring twisted spire...this
opulent Church dominates the Christianshavn skyline...The ascent of 400 steps
offers a magnificent overview of the city... the last 150 steps are outside the
spire and the winds were gale force at the top. We had covered a lot of territory
today so we decided to return to the ship via the world-famous statue of the
Little Mermaid who watches over Copenhagen Harbor at Langelinie. The sail
out was lovely as we sailed between Sweden with it’s brightly colored fields
and Demark with Kronborg Slot (Castle) looming on the shore…. We had a great
day in Copenhagen and look forward to our next visit.
