We were picked up at our hotel by Don, our expedition
guide and the owner of Heartland Travel and Tours for our private charter
flight from Winnipeg to Churchill. People came from all over the world to see
the polar bear migration… we had people
from New Zealand, Europe and even Dover, Delaware USA travel to Churchill… The day did not start off very well, Winnipeg
was fogged in... on our third attempt to takeoff we made it, albeit two hours
late...Immediately after arrival in Churchill, we boarded a school bus for a
half hour drive out on the land known as the tundra for our transfer at the
tundra buggy dock. We met our driver Kevin Burke from Tundra Buggy/Frontier
Adventures. Since we got a late start and had a lot of time to make up Kevin
went above and beyond to get us to Gordon and Polar Bear Points along the
Hudson Bay coastline to find bears. A few miles out we had our first polar bear
siting...a huge male running across the tundra...that was the start of our
chase. I was so pleased that we
encountered more than a dozen bears wandering, sleeping and some lounging on
the shores of Hudson Bay. For many wildlife enthusiasts, there is nothing quite
like seeing polar bears in their natural habitat, and Churchill, Manitoba
Canada—known as the "polar bear capital of the world"—is an ideal
location to see them. What a great day and experience we had! Late flight back
to Winnipeg and tomorrow. I posted an
awful lot of polar bear photos… sorry
for the excessive coverage but, all the time and money that went into this
trip, the bears deserve extra attention!
Now, I move to a new chapter, my 8 ½ month voyage on the ms Zuiderdam,
it should be an incredible journey. I
will advise soon…. Before my voyage
begins, as whether or not I will be blogging….
Some issues have potentially popped up that may make that too difficult…. Time will tell, no matter, I will have an
amazing adventure!
Wow. That is a bucket list fantasy for me. Pictures are fantastic.
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures of the Polar Bears! Such magnificent beasts! Glad you had a nice time. Sorry to hear of the issues possibly preventing you from blogging, but as we know, it is a lot of effort so understandable if something is making it more difficult to do. Have a blast no matter what happens and enjoy the 8+ months on the Zuiderdam! Thanks again for taking us on your trips with you!
