2018 Grand World Voyage, Day 111, San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA (Part 1 of 2)

I rose early for sail-in photos of San Juan, our last port on the 2018 World Cruise...  Boy,  the time has really flown by!  Janet, Mike and I cleared Immigration and started our tour of the historic old city and forts of San Juan. We made our way via Old San Juan first to Castillo San Felipe del Morro. El Morro construction started in 1539 to protect San Juan Bay’s deep harbor from attack by sea.  A six level fortress, it protected Spain’s access to the new world for over 300 years and has endured as a masterpiece of engineering from the 1500’s to the present. We then made our way to San Cristobál Fortress. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built in 1634 to protect the city from landside attacks. San Cristobál covers 27 acres and is the largest Spanish fort in the Americas.  It boasts an excellent view over Old San Juan and the sea...  I was able us use my National Park pass today as El Morro and San Cristobal are part of the National Park System... I love my senior pass!  After touring the forts we returned to the ship via the old city, stopping at the Plaza Colon and enjoying the 17th-century architecture, cobblestone streets and historical buildings....another great day in San Juan. Hard to believe this World Voyage is coming to a close....  Hope this isn’t my last World Voyage.
