Petra is a world heritage site also known as the Rose city and is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. The city was built by the Nabatean society in the 4th century BC. Words can hardly do justice to the true magnificence that is Petra. Petra is a huge site and most visitors do not have the time to cover it in one day but we gave it our best try. Ann, Ellie, Gyl and I left the hotel at 6:15 am, the Petra Guest House, a great hotel located at the entrance to Petra. Staying at this hotel gave us a head start on our walk through the Siq to the Treasury. The Treasury is the pride and joy of Petra and the most beautiful carved facade. Our mission today with our Guide Habu Mahmoud Bisdoul was to climb; i) the cliff viewpoint opposite the Treasury, ii) the Monastery and, iii) the High Place of Sacrifice. We accomplished two of the three tasks...we did not make the climb to the Monastery. The climb to the isolated High Place of Sacrifice was hard but an enjoyable mountain climb including flights of steps cut into rock...once at the top we took a trek across the mountain to the viewpoint above the Treasury… Magnificent and a bit scary from the position I was photographing from…. Oh well, I do like living on the edge. From there, we returned to the High Place of Sacrifice to properly tour the area. After leaving the High Place of Sacrifice, we walked the breathtaking Wadi Farasa processional route passing the Lion fountain, Roman Soldier’s Tomb, the Garden Complex and the Triclinium. The sights along the way were spectacular with so many beautiful colors…. What a spectacular day and the ladies were real troupers, putting in a pretty grueling effort. We had a great stay in Jordan once again. This is part 1 of 3 parts...
