2016 Grand World Voyage, Day 99, Katakolon, Greece

The port of Katakolon provides the gateway to Olympia, birthplace of the modern day Olympics.  It’s a little like traveling back to the 70s when I lived in Greece, about 20 miles away...  so much has changed here!  Ann, Cathy and I hired a taxi and went to Olympia, the major religious, cultural and sporting center linking Greece with the colonies of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.  Timing is everything...today was the rehearsal for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games torch lighting ceremony for the handover to the Brazilian Olympic Committee.  Nice to witness but the Temple and Alter of Zeus were closed off to visitors,  however,  I was able to snap a few photos.  We walked the Olympic complex and were able to see the Gymnasium, Stadium and the Crypt the vaulted passageway leading to the Stadium, the Palestra (training room), Theikoleon (priests residence) and the Sixteen bases of Zanes or statues of Zeus dedicated by athletes who were fined for cheating during the games.  We came back to Katakolon and had a delicious Greek lunch at the harbor with the Allan, Sandra, Michael & Susan.  It was a beautiful spring day in Greece!
