Incan Empires, Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala (Part 2 of 2)

Today was a pretty special day for me…..  I was able to visit the ancient Mayan City of Tikal, a place I have wanted to visit for a long time.  The sail in this morning was more than impressive with one of the volcanoes acting up just as we arrived, very cool.  The tour I took to Tikal was a Holland America Line tour and here is the summary description:  “From the pier, transfer to a nearby airport for a 90-minute flight by chartered aircraft to the vast northern region of Petén.  A one-hour drive along a rain forest-lined road brings you to the famous Mayan ruins of Tikal.  Begin a guided hike along dirt roads and pathways that will lead you back in time. A mysterious realm unfolds as you enter the forest surrounding the ruins, and the Great Plaza will come into view. You will visit the Pyramid of the Great Jaguar, the Central Plaza, the Palace of the Masks and Pyramid IV. Marvel at the size of the Central Acropolis and the North Acropolis, as well as the temples that tower above the tree line.”  Before we even arrived into Petén the flight proved a somewhat amazing experience in itself with such amazing views, particularly the volcanoes.   We didn’t do it exactly in that order but it was so amazing…..  The tour was just magnificent!  I have split the blog into two postings…..

  1. Jeff,
You don't know me but I did a world cruise last year. So this year I am following your travels by arm chair. I love that you chose this tour. Tikal is very special. Did you hear the howler monkeys cry? Happy travels, Ilene
