Day 51 Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands (Part 1 of 3)

Loved my first visit to the Solomon Islands…..  I was very excited as we sailed into port.  The greeting by the Solomon Island people was extraordinary, such enthusiasm…  the dances and the music was fabulous!  There were many people there to watch our arrival.  I went ashore first thing with Brad & John.  We arranged for a taxi for the day and headed out.  First stop was the casino for a money changer, they don’t like US dollars here.  Then it was off to the Central Market.  It was a very busy place to visit.  The people here are very friendly but very camera shy.  You have to work really hard to get a few photographs.  Nice place to visit…  Then it was off to the US War Memorial, great views from its lofty perch.  Next we stopped by Mataniko Village, very interesting!  This is not a place where tourists visit.  The people were very friendly and welcoming despite the fact that visitors were not expected.  Next up was the Solomons Peace Memorial Park.  Again, it was a nice viewpoint from up on Mt. Austen.  Then we went to the Botanical Gardens which were very disappointing…  A stop at the cultural center finished up our afternoon.  Brad & I got off in town to take some more photos as we walked back to the ship while John went to Bloody Ridge.  It was a very, very nice day….
