Day 15 Chuuk Islands, Micronesia (Part 1 of 2)

We arrived around noon today in very wet conditions…  The rains were torrential at times but…. It still was a nice visit.  The people of Chuuk were very friendly.  The town where we docked was small but it provided me with a wonderful overview of life in the Chuuk Islands.  A lot of people come here for the diving…  Having the bulk of the Imperial Japanese fleet lying at the bottom of Truk Lagoon helps make that possible.  I went ashore with Brad and we decided not to do our original plan of exploring the island due to the weather conditions.  We walked around town, talked with the people and took a lot of photos.  We eventually made it to the Truk Hotel where the gift shop, restaurant and bar was a big draw.  We settled in there joining Jacques, Paul & Sharon.  We sat back and drank and ate and just enjoyed the day.  As is the case from time to time, I once again took too many photos and have decided to post two blogs for today.  Hope you all enjoy the photos of the lovely Chuuk Island of Weno….

  1. Great photos, Jeff. The place does seem like a 'burg'. Maybe you were happy the port call lasted but a few hours. Historically, Truk Lagoon would make for good cocktail hour banter, though. Yes, the 'haves' in America are not always as happy as the friendly peoples you are encountering. Wonder what the families of Chuuk do about health care? Do these remote places have marijuana and Cialis? I suspect your travels are personally revealing. Next time, ask the locals about Obama and 9-11 to gather another perspective. So fascinating.

  3. I was doing research as a micronesian-american and it's so cool seeing all these pictures. I hope to visit there myself one day. It was especially cool actually seeing one of my cousins that resides in the U.S. now in one of those pictures. :)))
